In the current EU Referendum debate the issue of Britain’s military strength has only been referred to in broad generalisations along the lines of ‘Britain has the fourth largest defence budget in the world’.
Contained in the metrics used GlobalFirepower showing ‘Defense Budget by Country’ Britain does indeed rank fourth in this league behind Saudi Arabia and ahead of Russia. This position of Russia in the defence spending league I find very surprising as I was expecting its position to be closer to that of the USA or China.
A further dimension to add to Britain’s military position in the world can be added when comparing military strengths in terms of how the $ defence budgets of top ranking countries are converted into personnel and hardware. GlobalFirepower.com by measuring these aspects of military strength place Britain into 6th place.
This article is not attempting to influence voters to vote to leave or remain the EU but will hopefully add some dimension to the military aspect of the debate.
